How to use Your Laptop's Battery and Life Extend

Most laptop manufactors promoise that the battery of the Laptop you have will last a long time, they lied! The laptop battery always seems to stop working very early (when you're watching a dvd). Take the proper steps yourself to ensure you get the most out of your laptop's battery life!

The well lit screen on your laptop takes up more power than you think. While the screen is bright, you don't have to have it up to the maximum brightness in order to use it. Go to your screen settings and decrease the brightness so it's still comfortable for you to use.

Discontinue your wireless signal if you have one, while you're not using your laptop. 20-30 minutes of your laptops battery life goes towards supporting your WiFi wireless feature. Right click on your wireless icon and click disable.

Make sure you have the correct power scheme set on your laptop. You can choose to use maximum power or low power when not using your laptop. Play around with the settings until you find one you feel comfortable with.

How Choose an Excellent Computer or Laptop

It is not too hard to choose a computer or laptop when you know what you are going to use the computer for. That is the key, knowing yourself, and knowing the use you intend to give the laptop. Here is the email box and comment box; please do leave at least one comment. Let me know that you are reading here? And then there are the tips and warnings at the end.

There are some things that you need in a laptop or computer --that are considered necessities rather than luxuries.

If you shop around at a store, the salesperson there will point you to the computers that he or she wants to sell. So, you are not getting an unbiased opinion of which computer to purchase.

In this article, I give some helpful hints and suggestions to those who are going to choose computers today, this month or next month.

First decide how you will use your computer. Most people use it this way--either for everything or for practically nothing. You decide how much you use your computer.

If you use it for practically nothing, that means you might check email, send email and maybe do a little of the net surfing (shopping, browsing, and checking out the news or weather online). If this is your computer profile, then you need basics and can get by with almost any brand new computer there is on the market today.
Step2
However, if you want to do a little more with your computer. You want to browse, surf, send email. You want to send pictures or scan pictures into your computer from a scanner. Or perhaps you want to put pictures onto your desktop (on your computer) through a cellular phone or through an external camera. Then you need a little bit more than basics. Sometimes you might want to transfer pictures to a disk ( a cd), and or other times you might want to download music to a disk or to your computer. The more and more that you intend to use your computer, the more features you need.

If you want to use your computer for all those activities and tasks and more, and if you want to compose documents with your computer and use other graphic or word-processing programs, then you will need these at the very least:

1. Laptop (preferable but a desktop is acceptable)
2. USB ports (preferably three or four of these, though one might be acceptable--depending on use).
3. CD and DVD-Writer (Now, you can transfer files, music, pictures plus videos right onto a disk. You can take almost everything off your hard-drive and keep it safe on disk. I recommend doing duplicates, just in case. You will always have your important files and pictures that way).
4. You might want an extra or a long-lasting battery for your laptop. If you intend to travel with it, or even use it on the road locally , a lot, then you would want to purchase that long-lasting battery, or that extra battery. Sometimes these can range about two or three hundred dollars depending on the laptop.
(Some batteries last two hours while there are rare few that promise to last five hours. Obviously, if yours lasts five hours, you might not need two batteries).
5. If you live in an area that is stricken with tornados, earthquakes and blackouts on a regular basis, an extra investment in that extra battery might be quite helpful to you--especially if you work from your home computer.

6. Security programs: Most modern, brand-new computers have some security programs built right in. For example, most have "McAffee" or "Norton" with a free three-month trial basis. Personally, I do not like either of these two programs. You can try out an awesome program online--for free, called, "Zone Alarm". This is a very cool security program which actually captures offending ISPs and also keeps logs of everything. There is just something about Zone Alarm. I believe it is quite a helpful program.
Step3
Recommendations are helpful. And, in keeping with that statement of fact, I recommend ACER. Acer is a very cool computer company. I have used their computers for a number of years. I am very satisfied with the company.

I found an advertisement once in a magazine and thought, "I have never heard of that company". But, I decided to take a chance and try it (since it was on sale, anyway). I am so happy that I took the chance and tried Acer.

Probably, other than Apple, I would not choose another company for computers other than Acer.

Compaq is a great computer company also. A number of years ago, I used their customer service and I was completely satisfied with their company.

Google Tips more use full

For millions of people Google is an indispensable search tool that they use every day, in all facets of their lives. From work or school, research, to looking up movies and celebrities to news and gossip, Google is the go-to search engine.

But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.

Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.

  1. Either/or. Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. [dumb | little | man]

  2. Quotes. If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man".

  3. Not. If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb".

  4. Similar terms. Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man".

  5. Wildcard. The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. [can't * me love lyrics] will return the Beatles song you're looking for. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains, such as
educational information: ["dumb little man" research *.edu].

  6. Advanced search. If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.

  7. Definitions. Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

  8. Calculator. One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

  9. Numrange. This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).

  10. Site-specific. Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman.com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog.

  11. Backlinks. The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

  12. Vertical search. Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more:

Check How Much RAM is on Your Computer

Check How Much RAM is on Your Computer
Random Access Memory (or 'RAM' for short) is the memory your computer uses to operate programs. The more things you have running at once, the more RAM you require. Having too little RAM will also cause your computer to run slowly.

Open your Control Panel

Open 'System Tools'

Open 'System Information'

Look for 'Total Physical Memory' and 'Available Physical Memory'.

Consult with a professional or someone knowledgeable to discover if your computer would benefit from having more RAM installed or not. It's easy to install more and relatively inexpensive.

How Add FREE FONTS to a Computer - Windows XP

Are you tired of the same old fonts? Creating something that needs a little "zing"? It is easier than you think to find new fonts and install them on the home computer- absolutely FREE.

First, do a google search for free fonts. There are many sites. Choose one. I like www.urbanfonts.com It is as good as any for a place to start. Starting with urbanfonts.com follow the outlined steps.

Browse the website for a font that you really like. This may take a bit because there are so many and it is fun to browse them all. Once you have found one to save click on the tiny name in blue under the font sample. It will bring up the entire alphabet in that font. If it is acceptable then click on download. [choose WIN or MAC]

A small window will open up. Click on Open with Compressed Folder [default]. Click OK.

Another small window will pop up saying the download is complete. Click Open.

On the left hand side of the window click on Extract all Files. Keep hitting the Next prompts until you get to Finish. Click on Finish.

Now, go to Start. Click on Control Panel. Double click on Fonts Folder. Click on the magnifying glass icon to search.

Type in search for .ttf files. Any font you have downloaded will come up. Stop search once you find what you are searching for. Simply drag the name of the font to the left side of the screen and place under the control panel fonts folder.

It is now in your computer for use... create away! ...

Desktop icons are a great way to provide quick access to various programs, folders, and documents that you use on a daily basis. However, if you have a large number of icons on your desktop, it may seem very cluttered. The article below provides tips and tricks for organizing your desktop.

CREATING A PROGRAM SHORTCUT
To create a shortcut on your desktop to a program, browse to the program via the "Start" menu. Once you have located the program, right-click on it. On the expanded menu, go to "Send To" and left-click on "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you look at your desktop, you should find an icon to the program.

CREATING A FOLDER OR DOCUMENT SHORTCUT
To create a shortcut on your desktop to a folder or document, right-click on the "Start" button and left-click on "Explore". The Windows Explorer screen will display. Browse to the folder or document.

When you have located the file or folder, right-click on it. On the expanded menu, go to "Send To" and left-click on "Desktop (create shortcut)". When you look at your desktop, you should find an icon to the folder/document.

This part is totally up to you ... the idea is to organize the desktop however is best for your needs. The attached screenshot is an example of how you can organize them.

How to Easily Create a Partition on Your Hard Disk with XP

If you’ve moved up from Windows 95 or 98 to Windows XP, one big thing you’ll notice is that creating new partitions doesn’t have to be done from the command line any more. Windows XP makes it easy to create a new partition using the graphical disk management tool. Here’s how:
1. Turn off your computer and install your new hard disk. It’s unlikely that you have any unpartitioned space on which to create a new partition on the drive already in the machine, so you’ll need to add a new drive. New drives typically don’t come preformatted, so you’ll need to create your own partitions and format them.
2. Start your computer and logon as an administrator. Click Start and then click the Run command. In the Open text box type: diskmgmt.msc and click OK.
3. A Wizard will appear when the Disk Management console opens. Go through the Wizard’s steps and allow it to initialize the new disk, but do not allow the Wizard to convert the disk from basic to dynamic.
4. You will see, on the left side of the console, disk icons that represent “Disk 0″, “Disk 1,” etc. Your new disk should be the one with the highest number. The size of the disk should be listed, and the word “Unallocated” should be just under the size. Right click where it shows the size of the disk and click the New Partition command.
5. Click Next on the New Partition Wizard Welcome page.
6. On the Select Partition Type page, click on both of the options and read the Descriptions. We’ll assume here you’re creating a primary partition. Select Primary partition and click Next.
7. On the Specify Partition Size page, type in the size of the partition. Depending on what you want to use the disk for, you might want to create more than one partition. Type in the size of the new partition in the Partition size in MB text box and click Next.
8. On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, you can bind the partition to a drive letter or mount it in an empty NTFS folder. In this example, you’ll do it the old fashioned way and assign the partition a new drive letter. Select the drive letter and click Next.
9. You need to format the partition to use it. Always use NTFS unless you need to allow other operating systems on the same machine to access the drive. You can use the defaults, or customize the Allocation unit size based on the types of applications you want to run on the disk. Click Next.
10. Click Finish.
